A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
