Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it now features over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging AI video creators.
AI Proliferation Online
Studies have shown that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is often absurd or surreal.
“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to provide users the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
The platform announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 m media items are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a minor percentage of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they see by opening the topic control option in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be controlled under the setting cover news, style, cosmetics, and movement.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its guidelines oblige content makers to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the app will from now on add an AI-generated label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This step is intended to deter users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also launching a $2m educational fund for experts and organizations to create educational content about ethical AI use. This program will benefit charitable organizations focused on training computer science.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, following controversy over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the UK. It is expected to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a extensive automated help is proving valuable work at speed.”
