Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
