The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
